Russia has taken Ukraine by storm with its invasion of Ukraine. While it destroys the country’s infrastructure and buildings, kills innocents, and upends the lives of millions, it has taken western news outlets by storm, too. But what about the other wars around the world?

Battles Worldwide

The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) documents battles and other conflicts that rage worldwide. In addition to the deaths in the still-young Russia-Ukraine war, it reports these numbers of battle-related fatalities, by country, between January 1, 2021, and March 4, 2022:

  • Afghanistan — 32,263
  • Brazil — 3,024
  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo — 3,541
  • Ethiopia-5,669
  • Iraq — 1,617
