Recently, my wife and I escaped the chill of November in Minnesota by escaping to San Antonio, Texas. The city and its people charmed us. Highlights included the Alamo mission, the River Walk, Mexican food, a high school Mariachi band competition, and the Spanish frontier missions preserved within San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. We even watched the Day of Dead (Día de Muertos) parade of decorated boats on the San Antonio River Walk. But our visit to San Antonio would have been incomplete without a stroll through one of the city’s historic neighborhoods.

After we saw and experienced the major tourist and historic sites in and around the city, we walked through the King William Historic District. The neighborhood is filled with old houses and is located about one mile (1.6 kilometers) south of the Alamo mission in the city’s downtown.
